For more than 30 years, the McClure Miller Respite House has provided compassionate hospice care in a peaceful, home-like setting for individuals and families facing life's final chapter. As Vermont's only Medicare-certified inpatient hospice residence, the Respite House is a treasured community resource that offers comfort, dignity and support when it matters most.
Philanthropic support makes this care possible for every family we serve. Today, we're raising $2.5 million to ensure compassionate care remains available to all who need it for years to come.
Together, we are raising $2.5 million to protect and strengthen the McClure Miller Respite House for generations to come. Campaign support will address immediate operational needs while creating a foundation for long-term sustainability.
We Must Be Ready to Care for Our Community
Demand for hospice services continues to grow as Vermont's population ages. At the same time, the cost of providing high-quality, compassionate care continues to rise. Philanthropic support is essential to ensuring the Respite House can meet today's needs while preparing for tomorrow.
- Expand Access to Care: The data is clear — we need a 21-room Respite House to meet the needs of our community. Re-opening our third wing means we can care for 50 additional residents each year and provide more families with access to hospice care when they need it most.
- Meet Growing Community Need: The amount of Vermonters age 80+ grew by 28% from 2000 – 2023. As our population ages, demand for hospice services continues to increase, requiring greater capacity and resources to serve our community.
- Care in the Most Appropriate Setting: When possible, most people choose to die at home or in home-like settings like the Respite House. Costs to our health care system are lower when we provide exceptional end-of-life care at the Respite House rather than in a hospital setting. When our neighbors receive the care they need at the right time and in the right setting, everyone benefits and our community is stronger.
- Sustain Care for All: Insurance reimbursements do not fully cover the cost of care, making philanthropic support essential to keeping the Respite House accessible. About half of our residents receive full or partial fee reduction, made possible by philanthropy.
Coming to McClure Miller Respite House was the moment I could stop being a caregiver and just be his wife again. This place let us step into the final part of his journey with grace. It was peaceful. He wasn’t in pain. He was ready, and we were held.
