About Me

I joined the Spine Program at the Orthopedics and Rehabilitation Center as an orthopedic surgeon in 1992. I serve as medical director at the Spine Institute of New England and as an associate professor in the Department of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at UVM Larner College of Medicine.

My specialty is in treating patients with idiopathic and degenerative scoliosis, spinal stenosis, cervical myelopathy, degenerative disease and spinal tumors. Treatment options include spinal decompression, fusion and instrumentation.

I believe that every patient's condition is unique, and it is my role to act as a guide to help patients select the best treatment options for their lifestyles.

I am actively involved in laboratory and clinical research, with a focus on the mechanobiology of degenerative disease.

  • Dr. Monsey was totally prepared for my visit. He had copies of pertinent past visits with other physicians and referred to this information and how this impacts me during this visit. He was calm, took time to answer all questions, reviewed X-rays and other physician conclusions that affected me. Excellent physician.
  • I would rate, Dr. Monsey A 15 on a scale of 10 being perfect. He was very cordial, warm, friendly, professional, knowledgeable, and thorough.

  • This visit with Dr. Monsey was the most informative and useful I've ever had with regard to my back problems. His diagnostic and communication skills really helped me understand my condition and start a plan to deal with it. Even though his answers were not necessarily the ones I'd hoped to hear, they were the ones I needed to hear. Well done.
  • Dr. Monsey always gave his all, and when the second surgery I had was not successful, he was sympathetic and hopeful. The third procedure seems to have solved the problem now for the foreseeable future. He has restored my quality of life and for that I am extremely grateful!
