About Me

I am one of the country's foremost experts in performing Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery (TEM), a minimally invasive treatment for patients with early-stage rectal cancers and benign rectal polyps. Offering access to the entire rectum and more precise excision than standard transanal excision, TEM requires no surgical incision and is generally performed as an outpatient procedure, with more than 95 percent of patients discharged directly from the recovery room following surgery.

Transanal endoscopic microsurgery is offered only at about 100 locations in the U.S., as it requires special equipment and surgeons with special training and experience. I perform more TEM procedures than any surgeon in the country at University of Vermont Medical Center. In addition, I teach TEM throughout the U.S. and Europe and have authored the only textbook on Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery.

I perform more TEM procedures than any surgeon in the country at University of Vermont Medical Center.

  • It's too bad Dr. Cataldo is retiring. He's been a wonderful provider.
  • Dr. Cataldo was most helpful and very concerned about my health situation. Asked a specialist to come into the room and describe and explain a surgical procedure that I may have done. And he is taking my case to his colleagues to receive input and suggestions to help with his decisions regarding further steps.
  • Explained recovery experiences well.
  • Very comfortable with the information given.
  • He's the best!
  • Just outstanding once again. Put me at ease, completed exam, addressed an issue, put a plan in place going forward and assisted making that happen. Thank you!
