About Me

I'm an orthopedic spine surgeon at University of Vermont Medical Center and an assistant professor at the UVM Larner College of Medicine.

I provide operative and nonoperative treatment for disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, including scoliosis, fractures, infections, disc herniations, stenosis and myelopathy. I specialize in a variety of procedures, including cervical laminoplasty, cervical fusion, spinal osteotomy, scoliosis correction and lumbar fusion. I also provide care for patients who have previously undergone spine surgery and are suffering from ongoing symptoms.

I received my undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Massachusetts and completed the Orthopedic Residency Program at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California. I then pursued subspecialty training in spine surgery at the Harvard University Combined Spine Fellowship Program at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts.

I care for patients of all ages and activity levels. I believe that each patient has a unique situation that requires specialized care and a clear treatment plan, whether that involves surgery or not. I enjoy working with patients to identify the issues most important to them and to provide a clear path forward.

My research interests include investigating the cost-effectiveness of medical interventions, minimally invasive surgery and patient outcomes following surgery.

I enjoy working with patients to identify the issues most important to them and to provide a clear path forward.

  • The ball is IN MY COURT and I'm READY TO MOVE FORWARD toward AMBULATION = Walking
  • A PA did the preliminary interview and was thorough and friendly. Then Dr. Ziino came in and followed through obviously having talked with the PA. He always listens and cares what I am saying. I brought my adult son with me and they both walked the line nicely between giving him a say and keeping the focus on me. I smile as I think back. I am healing more slowly than I wish (1 yr since surgery) but they encouraged me to keep exercising. I later read the report on MyChart and knew less, so messaged Dr. Ziino. The nurse texted back, explaining the terminology and it matched what Dr. Ziino had said more clearly in the meeting. Everyone was really wonderful.

  • Dr. Ziino was great I always felt that we were having a discussion, and never felt that he was speaking down to me. I would feel fine with him performing an operation on me. You're lucky to have him

  • Top notch
  • Good intro to this provider and the assistant.
  • Dr. Zino took a lot of time to discuss pros and cons of different treatment options for me. He didn't rush me or make me feel like I didn't have any choices. I appreciated the time and detail he covered with me. I felt good by the time I left with what lay ahead for me.
