Overview of Research at UVM

Research is a central part of fellowship training at UVM. Founded in 1791, the University of Vermont is the state’s flagship public research university and an R1 Carnegie-classified institution, recognizing its status among the nation’s top universities for very high research activity and doctoral training. Through the Robert Larner, M.D. College of Medicine - one of the oldest medical schools in the United States - and its nursing, health sciences, and graduate programs, UVM trains more than 2,000 future clinicians, scientists, and health professionals each year. UVM’s research enterprise exceeds $260 million in annual external funding and is guided by its Common Ground Values of Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Openness, Justice, and Responsibility. UVM was also named the nation’s #1 School for Making an Impact by The Princeton Review in both 2024 and 2025, a recognition that reflects the institution’s broader culture of purpose, service, and meaningful work.

Within that environment, REI fellows benefit not only from mentorship within the division, but also from collaboration with a broad network of investigators whose work intersects with reproductive science in important ways. Fellows may find mentorship and project opportunities with faculty studying ovarian aging and reproductive lifespan, pregnancy and reproductive immunology, implantation and placentation, environmental and inflammatory drivers of reproductive outcomes, myometrial biology and preterm labor, menopause and digital health, and clinically focused outcomes research. What makes research at UVM distinctive is the combination of rigor and accessibility: fellows can pursue ambitious questions in a setting where mentorship is close, collaboration is real, and scholarly work is expected to be both thoughtful and meaningful. Whether a fellow’s interests are in molecular mechanisms, patient-centered outcomes, digital health, registry science, fertility preservation, pregnancy biology, or translational reproductive medicine, UVM offers the support and flexibility to build a serious and satisfying research experience.
