I was drawn to UVM for its exceptional general cardiology training paired with the opportunity to gain meaningful exposure across subspecialties. The culture here is close-knit, supportive, and deeply collaborative, which makes coming to work every day both fulfilling and energizing. The accessibility of nature and ease of getting outdoors in Burlington is truly unmatched.

Career plans: General cardiology, prevention, and cardiac imaging.

Fun facts/Hobbies: Outside of medicine, I enjoy going to the gym, running, and hope to get back into skiing this year. My wife and I also love traveling internationally and discovering new places together.

I was drawn to UVM for its strong academic environment that supports careers in academic cardiology, along with the opportunity to gain exposure beyond general cardiology training. Additionally, Burlington is a beautiful city to live in!

Career plans: 
I have a strong interest in academic cardiology. During my first year of fellowship, I plan to gain exposure to interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and advanced heart failure/critical care, and intend to decide on pursuing additional subspecialty training by the end of the year

Fun facts/Hobbies:
I have been playing drums since I was 11.  I love to play and attend live music!

A special note about living in Vermont and training at UVM:
Vermont is such a beautiful place to be year-round and I was really looking to have a slower paced life outside of the hospital. I enjoyed my training at UVM for residency so much so that I stayed an extra year as chief resident. It is amazing how much fun you can have at work when you are seeing diverse pathologies and enjoy the people you work with.

I first learned how to ride a bike as an adult (in Vermont!) Outside of work I like going on the Burlington Bike Path, kayaking, and in general spending time on Lake Champlain. I hope to learn to ski by the time I am done with fellowship.

I came to Vermont for the beautiful views and easy access to nature, but decided to stay for how supportive UVMMC has been. From day one as a resident, to my time
as chief resident, and now starting cardiology fellowship I have always felt well supported and like everyone is committed to helping me be the best that I can be.
UVMMC is definitely my second family.

A special note about living in Vermont and training at UVM: I was struck by how palpable the warm camaraderie of this program was on interview day, despite it being entirely virtual my year. One month into fellowship and I can say that has certainly borne out. UVM Cardiology stuck out on the trail as a well-balanced program with both robust clinical training and strong academic roots. This is my first time living in Vermont and I’m excited to soak in all the natural beauty, food, and culture.

  • Cooking: Relaxing hobby at the end of the day. I enjoy making and eating food from cultures around the world as a window to different cultures and a surrogate for travel.
  • Hiking/Traveling: I have hiked and camped in the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina, and in Norway, Finland, Switzerland, Italy and elsewhere.

A special note about living in Vermont and training at UVM: Everyone at UVM, from the cafeteria staff to the attendings, is super friendly and seems genuinely happy to be here. The program provides excellent, well-balanced training with plenty of space to explore specific interests and career options. Burlington also seems like an amazing place to raise my young family with great access to the outdoors!

Career Interests or Plans: Undecided! I think ACHD would be a good way to honor my pediatrics training, but really like everything so far, so maybe general cardiology. 

Fun Facts/Hobbies:

  • Raised in New Hampshire and spent the past seven years in Maine—I’m excited to see if VT can claim the title of my favorite northern New England state!
  • Hobbies include trail running, mountain biking, skiing (downhill, skate, Nordic BC, and skijoring), basketball, and Dungeons & Dragons. 
  • My wife, Anne, and I have two young sons, two Siberian huskies, and two cats.

A special note about living in Vermont and training at UVM: I had such invaluable experiences as a I resident and fellow that I knew I wanted to continue my training here. The hospital is unique in that it acts both as the community hospital for Burlington proper, but also the primary academic center for the state of Vermont and most of northern New York. There is also a great variety of interventional pathology from STEMI/ cardiogenic shock to complex CTO PCI. All the faculty are all kind, supportive, and have made this place feel like a second home for me!

  • I was born and raised on Long Island, New York but consider myself a “native” Vermonter since I’ve lived and worked here for 6 years now.
  • My wife, Christine, and I have a ten-year-old Beagle mix named Ernie who loves to come with us on hikes.
  • Outside the hospital, I enjoy hiking, running, fishing, snowboarding, playing on the UVM resident-fellow soccer team, and exploring Vermont’s craft breweries.

About living in VT and training at UVM:
After having lived in Florida for 6 years, and being from Belgium, I was drawn to Vermont for its beautiful nature and seasons. You are also very close to the rest of the New England area as well as Canada, so you can do infinite exploring.

Training at UVM gives you exposure to very complex coronary disease that will prepare you well for anything that you will encounter after your training. There is a great variety of pathology and subsequent interventions that we treat here at UVM. On top of that, the faculty are very supportive, approachable and will make you feel comfortable the minute you enter the cath lab.

  • I was born and raised in Ghent, Belgium and moved to the USA in 2018 after finishing medical school.
  • I am an avid golfer and used to be a semi-professional tennis player

The collegial learning environment with balanced distribution of excellent clinical and research experts was the primary reason for choosing UVM for my further training. Coming from a mountain state of WV, I find the green state of VT relatable but more accessible. There are more outdoor activities than time can fit but plan to explore more further.
