Transgender Youth Program
Transgender Youth Program at Golisano Children's Hospital
At Golisano Children’s Hospital at University of Vermont Health, we believe all people, including children and teens, should be free to live in their affirmed gender. The Transgender Youth Program offers education, support and medical treatment to gender-diverse youth and their families.
Our team includes a board-certified adolescent medicine physician, pediatric endocrinologist, pediatrician, pediatric nurse practitioner, social worker and psychologist. This unique, multispecialty approach positions us among the most comprehensive gender-affirming care clinics in the region. We collaborate with young people and their parents or guardians to meet their needs and preferences.
Why Choose Golisano Children's Hospital?
We offer:
- Evidence-based care: We follow guidelines for gender-affirming treatment for youth from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Endocrine Society and the World Professional Association of Transgender Health.
- Seamless transitions: Many gender-diverse teens continue to benefit from gender-affirming treatments into adulthood. When you turn 18, we help you transition to gender-affirming care with a UVM Health adult care provider, as appropriate.
- Education emphasis: As part of a health system anchored by an academic medical center, our physicians are active educators, many of whom are training the next generation of experts. We educate and train others on best practices in gender-affirming care.
Conditions We Treat
Gender-affirming care may be appropriate for children and teens who experience:
- Gender incongruence: Their affirmed gender identity doesn’t match their assigned sex at birth.
- Gender dysphoria: Gender incongruence that causes feelings of anxiety, depression or other psychological distress.
Gender-Affirming Treatments for Youth
Our role is to provide education, information and resources for young people who are exploring social or medical transition and their parents and guardians. We offer a spectrum of care, from simple observation to developmentally appropriate medical interventions. Gender-affirming care for youth may include:
- Counseling
- Puberty blockers
- Menstrual suppression
- Gender-affirming hormones
What to Expect
When families call to schedule with the Transgender Youth Program, our social worker calls parents or guardians to introduce the program and answer initial questions. They will gather information to determine the type of support and care that families are looking for.
