Don Mathews joined University of Vermont Medical Center in 2010 as director of the anesthesiology residency program. He led the planning process that incorporated primary care internal medicine into the academic department of medicine. Dr. Mathews was appointed chair of anesthesiology at the Larner College of Medicine in 2017 and stepped down from the role in 2020. He also served as an elected member of the UVM Health Medical Group board of directors and as a special advisor to the president and CEO of the UVM Health Medical Group.
Mathews earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed a residency in anesthesiology at Columbia- Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, followed by a fellowship in critical care and surgical metabolism research. Before joining UVM Medical Center, Dr. Mathews was vice chair and residency program director for the department of anesthesiology at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York.
