Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Artificial Intelligence (AI)

AI is a support tool — not a replacement for human judgment. Your care is always guided by skilled clinicians who review and confirm every recommendation.

AI at UVM Health

At University of Vermont Health, we believe technology should support care — not replace the personal connection between you and your care team. That’s why we use advanced artificial intelligence (AI) as a tool to help our providers focus more on you.

As a rural academic health system serving Vermont and northern New York, we are committed to using technology thoughtfully and responsibly. AI helps our teams work more efficiently, make informed decisions and provide care that is safer, more affordable and more personalized.

Why UVM Health Uses AI

AI can improve your health care experience in important ways:

More Accurate Diagnoses

AI tools can help clinicians review imaging and clinical information more closely. This support leads to safer, more accurate decisions about your care.

More Time with Your Provider

By reducing the time clinicians spend on paperwork and computers, AI helps them spend more time listening to you and answering questions.

Proactive, Preventive Care

AI can identify trends in patient and community health data. This helps us spot potential health risks earlier and take steps to keep you healthier.

How UVM Health Uses AI

We have been using AI since 2018 to support patient care across our health system. Some examples include:

  • Clinical notetaking: With your permission, ambient AI notetaking tools can help capture and summarize conversations during visits. During a pilot program, clinicians spent 60% less time taking notes and more time connecting with patients.
  • Enhanced diagnostics: AI helps clinicians review imaging more efficiently and accurately, reducing false alarms, repeat scans and unnecessary radiation exposure. This means fewer extra tests and quicker returns to work, school and daily life.
  • Insurance and billing support: AI tools can improve coding accuracy for insurance claims, helping prevent delays, reduce denials and create a smoother experience for patients.
  • Lower health care costs: From scheduling to billing, AI helps us simplify processes and save valuable time for our care teams, lowering costs for everyone.

We start with data privacy and patient confidentiality. That’s our north star. We never compromise on that.

Safety and Responsible Use of AI

AI is a support tool — not a replacement for human judgment. Your care is always guided by skilled clinicians who review and confirm every recommendation. Online tools can help organize health information, but they don’t replace clinical context. Care teams remain the best source for understanding results and next steps.

Some technologies used in health care now include AI-supported features built into existing systems. These applications follow the same safety, privacy and oversight standards as all other clinical tools.

We hold AI tools to the same high standards as all other health care technologies at UVM Health:

  • Our AI Governance Committee, which includes clinicians, IT experts, ethicists, legal and privacy professionals and patient advocates, reviews and monitors AI tools to protect patient safety and privacy.
  • AI tools are tested in real care settings and improved based on provider feedback.
  • As we expand our use of AI, we will clearly explain how these tools work, why they’re used and how they protect patients.

Our commitment is simple: to use AI in ways that enhance care and support the health of our communities.
