UVM Medical Center Auxiliary

University of Vermont Medical Center
UVM Medical Center Auxiliary

Founded in 1920, University of Vermont Medical Center Auxiliary exists to support UVM Medical Center and is the hospital’s largest outright organizational donor. Since its inception, the Auxiliary has supported the mission of UVM Medical Center through charitable gifts and the provision of services for patients, families and staff. Proceeds from member dues and South Burlington’s Replays Resale Shop continue to fund high-need and emergent projects that enhance the patient experience, such as renovating care environments, funding nursing professional development, purchasing new technologies and providing comfort items to aid in healing.

Impact

The Auxiliary proudly funds initiatives across UVM Medical Center in service to patients and families, employees and the community. Philanthropic investments by the Auxiliary provide both seed funding to launch innovative employee-led projects and supplemental funding for existing UVM Medical Center programs with proven benefits to patients and care delivery. Below are a few gift highlights from the past year:

Home Intervention for Safety Solutions (HISS) Program

Free to participants, HISS supports community members who are at high risk of falling, particularly those in rural areas who live on a fixed income. This mobile service provides home-based modifications such as shower bars, hallway railings and ramps that help increase participants’ confidence at home, improve their mobility and balance, and reduce injuries.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Patients who suffer from a heart attack, undergo surgery or have a heart condition often require cardiac rehabilitation. Our medically supervised program has led to a 25% higher survival rate among participants and a 30% reduction in hospital readmissions. Maintenance and replacement of the exercise equipment is crucial to sustaining the program and accommodating the high volume of use and the spectrum of abilities among program participants.

VT-BRIDGES (Vermont Broadening Resources in Developing Gerontological Education and Social Work)

With Vermont’s population projected to reach one in three residents over age 60 by the year 2030, the growing health care and social services workforce gap has reached a critical juncture. To help address this gap, VT-BRIDGES recruits, educates and helps retain professionals in the field of aging through hands-on skills training, mentoring and community-based programming.
