Residents Urged to put Heart Health First During Cold Snap
Screenings in Elizabethtown, Ticonderoga offer simple checks to help people stay safe and active
Elizabethtown, NY – From skiing to simple daily errands, frigid weather can put extra stress on the body. That’s why University of Vermont Health Network – Elizabethtown Community Hospital is offering free heart health screenings this month, giving community members an easy way to check their numbers and stay active with confidence.
Screenings will take place:
- Tuesday, February 10 from 2–5 pm at 75 Park Street, Elizabethtown
- Wednesday, February 11 from 2–5 pm at 101 Adirondack Drive, Ticonderoga
These walk‑in events include cholesterol checks, A1C tests, blood pressure, BMI, EKGs, diabetes education, exercise guidance, and smoking cessation support. No appointment is needed.
Why Heart Health Matters
February is National Heart Month, and heart disease remains a serious health challenge in New York State. Heart disease is the leading cause of death statewide, according to the New York State Department of Health. State public health data also shows an estimated 1.3 million adults in the state have cardiovascular disease. And prevalence is higher among adults who live in rural regions of New York (9.9%).
These free checks are a simple way to spot concerns before they affect daily life — especially during winter activities that can put added strain on the heart, like skiing, skating or snowshoeing. The screenings also help people prepare for a healthy start to spring.
