Patients, Community Members Invited to Central Vermont Medical Center Bone Health and Osteoporosis Event
An interdisciplinary panel of practitioners from Green Mountain Community Fitness and the hospital will discuss nutrition, exercise, fall prevention and more
BERLIN, Vt., - Patients and community members are invited to a bone health and osteoporosis event hosted by University of Vermont Health – Central Vermont Medical Center, where experts in bone health, nutrition, fitness and more will share information on maintaining bone health and treating osteopenia and osteoporosis.
The interdisciplinary panel discussion will include practitioners from Green Mountain Community Fitness and the hospital, strength demonstrations and an audience question-and-answer session. It will take place from 5 – 7pm Thursday, Feb. 19, in the lower lobby of Central Vermont Medical Center, 130 Fisher Road, Berlin. Primary care providers and registered dieticians will also be available during the Q&A.
Attendees are asked to RSVP online or by calling 802-371-4464. People can also submit a question about bone health to the panel by filling out an online form.
“Despite the importance of bone health, it receives little attention until bone mass has been lost or someone suffers a fracture. Fortunately, screening and treatment is available in our community” said Emily Byrne, DNP, APRN, a nurse practitioner at CVMC and one of the event organizers. “As a primary care provider, I have seen how fractures can be life-altering. It is crucial that we empower patients to prevent and treat bone loss through nutrition, strength training, fall prevention strategies and knowing when to speak with their provider about pharmacotherapy.”
Osteoporosis, a common bone disease, is characterized by low bone mass resulting in decreased bone strength and increased risk of facture. It affects about one in 10 adults over the age of 50 and can significantly impact an individual’s quality of life.
