Mental Health Urgent Care
About Mental Health Urgent Care
Mental Health Urgent Care (MHUC) fulfills a critical need and provides a bridge between emergency and primary care, much like traditional physical health urgent care. It is for people who need mental health services, support and treatment but do not require a trip to the emergency department. Care is provided in a trauma-informed, suicide-safe environment.
No appointment is needed. Walk-in care is available.
Patients We Serve
MHUC is available to adults age 18 and older who are seeking immediate, same-day care for mental health concerns or who are experiencing a self-defined crisis.
We serve adults with complex and multiple health concerns (including intellectual disability, substance use disorder or traumatic brain injury).
If a child needs access to services, our staff will assist in making referrals for appropriate care. We understand some patients may arrive with children. MHUC is a family-friendly environment, and services can be family-focused, as needed.
Our Services
MHUC provides therapeutic options to people in need of mental health care. In partnership with Howard Center, Pathways Vermont and Community Health Centers, we provide the following services:
- Peer support
- Mental health assessments
- Brief interventions
- Care management and coordination
- Safety planning
- Medical care, such as medical assessments, wound care, health education and chronic disease management
- Assistance with medications
- Referrals or connections to other services and resources
MHUC staff are able to make referrals to different types or levels of care in our community. Depending upon a patient’s specific needs, we may refer to outpatient treatment, intensive outpatient programs, crisis stabilization placements or inpatient psychiatric hospitalization.
MHUC does not provide drug and alcohol treatment or detox services. You may access those services with UVM Health’s Addiction Treatment Center.
Insurance & Billing
MHUC is fully funded for three years. No one seeking services during this period will be charged or billed except when guests who have health insurance coverage receive services for physical health medical care. Staff will review any billing with guests and receive advance consent to provide services.
