Intensive Care Unit, UVM Health - Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital

About Our Location

The Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at University of Vermont Health – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital provides comprehensive care for the critically ill. The unit was designed by our ICU staff to provide enhanced care and encourage family support in a healing environment. The unit includes:

  • 14 private rooms (all within steps of a large nurses’ station for better visibility)
  • Two negative airflow isolation rooms, which allow air to flow into, but not out of, the room. These rooms may be used for patients with an airborne contagious disease.
  • Close proximity to operating rooms, post-anesthesia care, emergency department, radiology and the cardiac catheterization lab.

Our Services

The unit provides holistic care using a multidisciplinary approach for critically ill patients requiring advanced monitoring and intensive treatment.

  • Monitoring: Close observation and specialized monitoring of patients.
  • Collaboration: Interdisciplinary collaboration with a specialized team that includes physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, dietitians, rehab services (physical, occupational and speech therapy), social work and discharge planning. The ICU team works together to provide high-quality patient and family care.
  • Nursing care: Intensive nursing care, including assessing patients' conditions, taking vital signs, hemodynamic monitoring and administering medication.

Conditions We Treat

We provide care to patients with serious conditions, including:

  • Life-threatening illnesses like shock, sepsis and acute respiratory failure
  • Infectious diseases
  • Poisoning and overdose
  • Trauma care and major surgical procedures
  • Acute gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Organ system dysfunction such as cardiac, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, neurological, endocrine, renal and hepatic disorders

Treatment Capabilities

  • Advanced life support equipment, including mechanical ventilation
  • Hemodynamic monitoring
  • Temporary cardiac pacemakers
  • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP) therapy
  • Hemodialysis and Continuous Renal Replacement (CRRT) Therapy
  • Targeted Temperature Management (TTM) post cardiac arrest
