Save Lives. Donate Blood.
The Blood Donor Center, coordinated by UVM Health – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, relies on the generosity of people like you.
The blood we collect — at the Blood Donor Center and at blood drives throughout the region — provides more than 95% of the blood used at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital and supplies other hospitals in Elizabethtown, Malone, Saranac Lake and Glens Falls.
If you have any questions, please contact our team at adkbloodcenter@cvph.org.
- We’re accredited by the AABB, the national accrediting agency that oversees blood banking.
- The blood and blood products processed by the Adirondack Blood Center meet or exceed all national standards for safety and quality.
- The pre-screening questions and standards that our donors must adhere to, the policies and protocols used in collecting the donations, and the testing and processing carried out prior to making the blood available are the same as those adhered to by the American Red Cross and other accredited programs.
- The Adirondack Blood Center draws from nearly 9,000 donors on average per year.
- As of 2024, we have 21 donors with 100 Whole Blood Donations. We have 68 donors with more than 100 blood product donations, including platelets.
- Volunteer donors provide nearly all blood used for transfusions in the United States.
- The donor’s body replenishes the fluid lost from donation in 24 hours. It can take up to two months to replace the lost red blood cells.
- Whole blood can be donated once every eight weeks.
- Platelet products can be donated through a process called apheresis.
- Anyone in good general health, over 16 years old, and meeting the criteria may donate blood.
U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Standards
The U.S. FDA has lifted several blood donation restrictions. The following updates have been made:
- The deferral recommendations associated with the geographic risk of vCJD (Mad Cow Disease) for time spent in the United Kingdom (U.K.) from 1980-1996; time spent in France and Ireland from 1980-2001; and receipt of a blood transfusion in the U.K., France, or Ireland from 1980 to the present have been eliminated.
- Blood donation eligibility criteria based on sexual orientation, which restricted sexually active gay and bisexual men from giving blood, have been eliminated.
- Tattoo and piercing regulations have changed from one-year deferrals to three months.
