Message from the Program Director
Welcome to UVM Family Medicine!
My goal for our residents is to allow you to graduate in 3 years with the opportunity to practice full spectrum Family Medicine, in whatever environment you choose. We work really hard to give you a strong foundation in inpatient and outpatient medicine, adult and pediatric medicine, sports medicine, as well as full spectrum reproductive care. Post-residency, you will be able to deliver a baby on a plane, train or automobile! And for those of you who choose, you will be well-qualified to independently practice low-risk obstetrics. Beyond those foundations, all of our residents have exposure and training in addiction medicine, gender affirming care, point of care ultrasound, and office-based procedures.
Approximately half of our graduates stay and practice in Vermont (both locally in Chittenden County, as well as in more rural areas of the state). The other half spread their wings, and practice around the globe. See where our recent graduates are practicing.
Taking care of families and seeing the difference small medical interventions can make in an entire family’s life, is one of the most rewarding and privileged things you will do as a physician. Program Strengths & Goals
Our residency program strengths include:
- On-going curriculum development: gender-affirming care, addiction medicine (with dedicated medication for opioid use disorder clinics (MOUD) at Family Medicine Milton), comprehensive reproductive health training, RHEDI program with opt-out termination training, sports medicine curriculum with specialized hands-on Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) training
- Focus on population health and transition of care, with a dedicated transition of care clinic
The program is designed to develop the personal and professional skills you need as a family physician. Your clinical training is complemented by academic and research opportunities to give you the confidence and expertise you'll need for your continuing growth within family medicine.
Our program goals include:
- Train competent, compassionate, full-spectrum Family Medicine Physicians who can provide care in diverse practice settings, including primary care, obstetrics and inpatient medicine
- Develop Family Physicians who are prepared for the future, as well as attuned to population health and quality of care.
- Emphasize humanism and patient-centered care in the development of longitudinal relationships – the “heart” of UVM Family Medicine

I appreciate the opportunity to serve a rural community in our continuity clinic while being trained at an academic center that is very collaborative. This collegial environment allows us to grow and learn from providers across specialties and interdisciplinary professionals from nursing, therapy, pharmacy, case management, and others. This experience is invaluable to my training in family medicine.
Vermont is a wonderful place to live and UVM is an awesome place to train! I feel well supported by our faculty and the friendly learning environment in both the hospital and the clinic allows for excellent learning. Our residency training allows us the flexibility to explore our interests while ensuring that we leave well trained and prepared to practice full spectrum family medicine.
I loved being at an academic medical center in Boston but found myself missing the small-town community I grew up in – For me, UVM gives me both a training center with a focus on academic excellence and research as well as the opportunity to care for patients in a more rural setting just 30 minutes North. As the major healthcare hub for the region, we see a little of everything and folks who have sometimes travelled great distances for excellent care. Not to mention that one can find oneself unplugged in the Mountains or kayaking in Lake Champlain just minutes from the hospital! UVM balances broad spectrum exposure with highest quality care in a place where you can really get to know your patients and colleagues, and I am so glad we landed here.
I chose to pursue UVM for the natural beauty that Vermont offers and the robust full-spectrum clinical training available within the program. I am excited to be in a place that supports both my professional goals and personal passions!
