As members of a Department of Medicine at an R1 institution, our faculty are internationally recognized for excellence in research. In aggregate, our faculty produce hundreds of publications a year in high-impact journals including the New England Journal of Medicine, Science, and JAMA.
The Department receives millions of dollars annually in extramural funding which includes support for the Vermont Center for Immunology and Infectious Disease, the Vermont Lung Center, the Cardiovascular Research Institute, the Vaccine Testing center, and numerous other programs that include basic, clinical, and translational science. Faculty members serve on NIH study sections and FDA Advisory panels, are editors of journals and members of editorial boards, and hold leadership positions in national organizations.
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program offers a two-year pathway for categorical Internal Medicine residents who are eager to learn research fundamentals and actively participate in scholarly projects. Residents present their work locally at the annual Resident Research Day and have additional CV-building opportunities to share their research at regional and national conferences, as well as to publish in peer-reviewed journals.

Andy Hale, MD, FIDSA
Amanda Kennedy, PharmD, BCPS
Amanda Kennedy, PharmD, BCPS received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from Northeastern University. She completed a pharmacy residency at the University of Vermont Medical Center, followed by a health services research fellowship at the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine. She joined on as faculty in 2003 after receiving a career development award (K08) for investigating ambulatory medication safety from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Dr. Kennedy has received funding from federal and state sources, involving medication safety, outcomes research, and clinical quality improvement. Dr. Kennedy currently holds the rank of Professor of Medicine and spends the majority of her time coaching and mentoring residents, fellows, and faculty in completing health services research and quality improvement projects.
