The University of Vermont offers a five-year urology residency program approved by the American Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and American Urological Association. Residents gain experience in both in-patient and outpatient procedures and care.
First Year
PGY1 residents will spend six months in Adult Urology as well as the following rotations:
- Surgical Intensive Care Unit
- General Surgery
- Pediatric Surgery / Plastic Surgery
- Acute Care Surgery / Trauma
- Surgical Oncology
- Gynecologic Oncology
Second Year
PGY2 residents spend nine months on Adult Urology, one month on Surgical Pathology, one month with the Nephrology service, and one month on Pediatric Urology.
Third Year
PGY3 residents will solidify their broad fund of urologic knowledge in both pediatric and adult urology. Residents spend between four to five months on Pediatric Urology, one month with time divided between Interventional Radiology and the Radiation Oncology teams, and between six to seven months in Adult Urology.
Fourth Year
PGY4 residents are transitioning from supervisor-directed and task-oriented residency training to independent clinical judgment and evidence based clinical practice. PGY4 residents spend between six to seven months on Adult Urology and between five to six months on Pediatric Urology.
Chief Year
The year is designed to provide the Chief with formal experience in medical resource management, leadership within a medical team, professional communication, complex surgical skill development and independent delivery of high-quality clinical care. The successful individual will be capable of functioning in an independent manner with excellent clinical judgment and communication skills that will facilitate their performance as physicians. PGY5 residents spend the year on Adult Urology.
