First Year
The PGY1 year exposes the orthopedic resident to a broad range of surgical skills and simulations. First years spend their clinical time on a variety of rotations. These include Acute Care General Surgery, Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery, ED Co-Management, Surgical ICU, Internal Medicine Hospitalists Care, and other General Surgery Services. This first year is designed to develop the residents' skills in managing surgical procedures needed to care for the orthopedic patient population.
Second Year
During the PGY2 year, residents are given exposure to the Trauma Service, the Emergency Department, Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, and Spine. The first of two 4 week blocks of protected Research time occur during PGY2.
Third Year
In the PGY3 year, residents gain exposure to many services including Sports Medicine, Total Joint Reconstruction, Foot & Ankle, Upper Extremity, and Spine. They have their second 4 week block of protected Research time.
Fourth Year
The PGY4 year consists of rotations with Pediatrics and Oncology, Chief of the Trauma service, Spine, Adult Reconstruction, Sports Medicine, and Foot & Ankle.
Fifth Year
During the PGY5 year (Chief year), residents develop their arthroscopic skills on the Sports Medicine Service. They also spend time on the Joint Reconstruction Service, Pediatrics/Oncology Service, Upper Extremity, and the Trauma Service. There is a 4 week elective block where the PGY5 can decide on the rotation of their choice.
