Welcome to Neurology. We are delighted that you have chosen a career path in Neurology. On behalf of the residents, faculty, and staff at the University of Vermont it is my pleasure to invite you to explore our website for information about Vermont's premier Neurology Residency Program.
The primary aim of the Neurology Residency to provide an inclusive, collaborative, educational environment to train excellent clinical and academic neurologists across the breadth of general and specialty neurology, while providing the highest quality care to the communities we serve. Our residents achieve clinical excellence through an active, hands-on approach to patient care, graduated levels of autonomy, and a strong emphasis on highly effective communication. We are most proud of the collegiality in our program among residents, faculty, and staff.
The Department of Neurological Sciences of the Larner College of Medicine at UVM and the UVM Medical Center offer a fully accredited neurology residency training program that provides a thorough and broad-based clinical neurology experience for residents with balanced inpatient and outpatient exposure, a robust and interactive didactic curriculum, ample teaching opportunities, and exposure to clinical, translational, and basic science research.
The University of Vermont Medical Center is the largest academic hospital in Vermont and serves as the regional referral center for approximately one million people in Vermont and northern New York, as well as the community hospital for approximately 160,000 residents in Chittenden and Grand Isle counties in Vermont. The mix of patients seeking primary and tertiary care gives our residents a rich and comprehensive experience in clinical neurology with opportunities to be the first to work up a neurologic symptom and the tertiary referral center for rare diseases.
The size of our program is one of our strengths. We offer a categorical training program with five residents in each class, PGY1 through PGY4. The PGY1 residents participate in the Internal Medicine preliminary medicine year and benefit from the same robust training and rotation experience as our Internal Medicine Residents. Residents from all classes enjoy a close relationship with our clinical and academic faculty, with strong mentoring experiences that last through residency and beyond. Residents have opportunities to adapt their training to match their academic and career goals. Resident participation in curriculum development and teaching is emphasized throughout all years of training.
Burlington is a thriving small city sitting on the shore of Lake Champlain and nestled between the Adirondack Mountains to the west and the Green Mountains to the east. The area offers unparalleled natural beauty and bustles with year-round activity including swimming, sailing, apple picking, skiing, hiking, as well as art, theater, and great restaurants. The Burlington community is an attractive, friendly, and safe environment for residents and their families.
