UVM Medical Center Fellowship Program
Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology

Welcome to the Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship Program at the University of Vermont Health Network.

This one-year fellowship in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology (MSDO) is accredited by the ACGME and approved by the American College of Mohs Surgery (ACMS).

Our program provides comprehensive training for dermatologists seeking advanced expertise in dermatologic surgery. The curriculum covers all aspects of MSDO, including:

  • Basic science, anatomy, and anesthesia
  • Ethics, pre- and post-operative management
  • Surgical technique, wound healing, and Mohs surgery
  • Laboratory techniques and interpretation of pathologic specimens
  • Immunostaining in Mohs surgery
  • Cutaneous reconstruction, scar revision, dermabrasion, and rhinophyma correction
  • Cutaneous oncology, laser surgery, and epidemiology
  • Medicolegal and regulatory issues, quality assurance, and self-assessment

We also hold quarterly journal clubs to review and discuss emerging research in dermatologic surgery.

Clinical Experience
Our fellows receive extensive training in facial reconstruction. We perform approximately 2,500 Mohs surgery cases annually and reconstruct 99% of wounds requiring repair (excluding complex eyelid defects). Fellows assume graduated surgical responsibilities and will easily complete the minimum of 500 Mohs cases and 500 reconstruction cases as the primary surgeon.

Fellows work closely with attending Mohs surgeons and collaborate with specialists in Oculoplastics, ENT/Facial Plastics, Plastic Surgery, Radiation Oncology, and Surgical Oncology. Participation in a weekly multidisciplinary tumor board is also required.

Facilities and Academic Expectations
The fellowship is based in our newly constructed Ambulatory Care Center at 350 Tilley Drive in South Burlington, which houses the entire Clinical Department of Dermatology.

In addition to surgical training, fellows contribute to the education of dermatology residents, medical residents, and students. They deliver lectures on dermatologic surgery and engage in scholarly activity, including preparing manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and presenting at regional or national meetings.
