Eligibility Requirements

The National Residency Matching Program requires that we disclose all eligibility requirements for training set forth by the sponsoring institution and the program during the recruitment period and before the applicable Rank Order List Certification Deadline. These requirements may include pre-employment testing (e.g., illicit drug screening), background checks (e.g., criminal, financial, etc.), visa sponsorship, and any other requirement(s).

Eligibility for Fellows and Residents

Programs should select from among eligible applicants based on their preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills, and personal qualities.

Programs must not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color, national origin, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital status, ancestry, disability, veteran status, or other legally protected status.

Visas

UVM Medical Center ACGME accredited programs only accept J-1 visas or for Dental Resident Applicants only TN (Trade National) visas.  Applicants must have a U.S. citizen Permanent Resident Status. No other visa status will be accommodated.

Selection of Residents/Fellows

An applicant must meet one of the following qualifications as established by the ACGME:

  • A graduate of a medical school in the United States or Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME); or
  • A graduate of a college of osteopathic medicine in the United States or Canada accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA); or,
  • A graduate of a medical school outside the United States or Canada, and meeting one of the following additional qualification:
    • Holds a currently-valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment; or,
    • Holds a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a United States licensing jurisdiction in his or her current ACGME specialty/subspecialty program; or,
    • Has graduated from a medical school outside the United States and has completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.
  • Anyone entering a UVM Medical Center fellowship must be eligible for a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Vermont.
  • Each program determines the appropriate maximum number of year’s allowable post medical school or completion of a previous residency training program.

Allopathic (MD) Applicants

MD applicants entering a residency training program at UVM Medical Center must have passed Step 1 and 2 of USMLE prior to employment start date. Some programs require a passing score prior to Rank Order List Deadline

Osteopathic (DO) Applicants

DO applicants entering a residency training program at UVM Medical Center must have passed COMLEX 1 and 2 (CE and PE) prior to employment start date. Some programs require a passing score prior to Rank Order List Deadline.

Specific residency programs may require DO applicants to have passed Steps 1 and 2 of USMLE prior to employment start date. DO applicants should contact the UVM Medical Center residency program for further information.

Pre-employment Testing

UVM Medical Center performs background checks on all employees upon hire.

Reappointment

Residents shall not be re-appointed if s/he has not passed USMLE Step 3 (MD) or COMLEX Part 3 (DO) and be eligible for a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Vermont prior to the start of their PGY-3 year.
