Vascular Surgery

We provide an educational and training environment aimed to allowing each fellow to maximize their full potential. We develop fellows into sub-specialists who are expert in the comprehensive care of arterial and venous disease including the full range care from endovascular and open surgical techniques to non-operative management.

Surgical Residents looking to specialize and board-certify in Vascular Surgery will find a strong ACGME accredited Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the University of Vermont Medical Center. The fellowship follows the Independent "5 + 2" paradigm leading to Board Certification in Vascular Surgery. Residents completing a general surgery or cardiothoracic residency are eligible to apply.

Message from the Program Director

The Vascular Division includes 6 board-certified vascular surgeons who are highly motivated to educate the next generation of vascular surgeons through individualized instruction. The two-year fellowship offers the complete range of clinical experience, including a wide variety of open and endovascular surgery performed in a state-of-the-art hybrid operating room. Rotations include a comprehensive experience in the David Pilcher Noninvasive Vascular Laboratory to prepare the fellow for the Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation (RPVI) examination. Our experienced team includes four advanced practice providers who support patient care. In addition, the UVMMC Department of Surgery trains 4 categorical general surgery residents per year.

Opportunities for teaching and clinical research are key components of the training program. The UVMMC Division of Vascular Surgery was a founding member of the Vascular Study Group of New England (VSGNE) and is an active participant in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI). Vascular fellows will gain experience in quality assurance and improvement through these initiatives.

Our two-year program is designed to produce compassionate and skilled surgeons who practice evidence-based medicine with a focus on optimizing outcomes and lifelong learning. Graduates of the vascular fellowship will be prepared for the independent practice of vascular surgery in an academic or private practice setting.
