Message from the Faculty
Welcome to the Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at UVM Medical Center and the University of Vermont. Our Fellowship program offers a long tradition of training outstanding academic and clinical pulmonary and critical care physicians. Our alumni are spread throughout the country in academia, private practice, and in the medical industry.
Our program provides a unique blend of expertise and experiences in patient care, research and teaching, all in the beautiful setting of northern Vermont.
Our resources include UVM Medical Center, a 450-bed tertiary care academic teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Vermont College of Medicine, which provides inpatient and outpatient care to approximately one million people in northern Vermont and northern New York, as well as a world renowned research facility in the Vermont Lung Center.
Our faculty has trained at some of the best pulmonary disease and critical care programs in the country, and is fully committed to your education and professional development. We believe we offer one of the finest fellowship education experiences for a program our size in the country.

University of Vermont Medical Center offered an amazing pulmonary critical care experience with the right mix of clinical training and academics. Graduating from this program you will be comfortable in a big tertiary care academic center or a small community hospital with limited resources. We have a wide variety of research from basic science to more clinically oriented research. The faculty and staff are some of the best people I have worked with while the city offers a lot of scenic hikes and skiing nearby.
I picked the University of Vermont Medical Center because it provided an excellent combination of clinical training and world class research in a supportive environment. UVM is a comprehensive and rigorous training program that emphasizes hands-on clinical experience, ensuring I develop the necessary skills to excel in this specialized area. The faculty members are distinguished professionals who are actively involved in research, providing me with valuable opportunities for collaboration and academic enrichment. Lastly, the programs location in Burlington, Vermont offers a unique and vibrant setting to live and train.
At UVM there exists a unique nexus of cultures, combining the best of both tertiary academic centers with community care. Here, fellows treat complex patients while being exposed to a variety of pulmonary or critical care research, including bench, translational and clinical trials. Whichever path a fellow chooses, the division is supportive and mobilizes its resources to help them succeed. Additionally, living amongst the lakes, rivers and mountains certainly isn't the worst environment to train in.
I wanted to be in a place that is not only clinically strong but also academically inspiring. I chose UVM for my PCCM training because it provides rigorous clinical training within a hospital that has a genuinely positive and supportive work environment. Having a high volume of airway and procedural training was very important to me, and UVM offered strong exposure in that area. The faculty are not only well-known national and international leaders in their fields, but also incredibly supportive and simply great to work with on a day-to-day basis. They bring opportunities to the table that range from Med-Ed to BENCH research and everything in between. And being in Vermont with its beautiful summers, quintessential fall, and world class skiing in the winter was just an added bonus.
