Clinical Experience

The University of Vermont Neuromuscular Medicine Division provides the majority of care for patients with neuromuscular conditions in the Vermont and upstate New York region. We have clinical centers of excellence for patients with muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, inflammatory neuropathies, inflammatory myopathies, and ALS. Our physicians are supported by a neuromuscular dedicated team that includes a clinical nurse expert, medical assistant, research coordinator, and administrators.

Neuromuscular fellows care for patients in the general neuromuscular clinic, pediatric and adult MDA clinics, ALS clinic, and the electrophysiology lab. In collaboration with the faculty, the neuromuscular fellow also provides expert guidance to the inpatient UVM neurology team when patients with neuromuscular disorders are admitted to the hospital. Fellows do not take overnight or weekend call. Although research is not required, time is built into the fellow's schedule to facilitate participation in research if this experience is desired.

Sample Clinical Schedule:

  1. 4 Half-day Clinics per week (Neuromuscular, Myasthenia Gravis, ALS, MDA)
  2. 3-4 Half-day EMG, Ultrasound, Autonomic sessions per week
  3. 1 Half-day Nerve and Muscle Pathology Reading per week
  4. Participation in the inpatient neuromuscular consultation service

3 Carefusion EMG Machines:
1 Comprehensive Autonomic Testing System

EMG: 2200-2400 studies per year
Autonomic Tests: 50-60 studies per year
