The University of Vermont has had a long-standing interest in multiple sclerosis, beginning in the 1950's when Dr. George Schumacher, Chairman of the Department of Neurology, led the first effort to develop criteria for the diagnosis of MS.
The next Chairman, Dr. Charles Poser was equally well-known for his work in MS and other demyelinating diseases of the CNS. This interest was sparked and sustained by the high prevalence of MS in Vermont and adjacent Upstate New York
The MS Center at UVM was re-established in 2001, under the leadership of Dr. Hillel Panitch, with the intention of developing a comprehensive MS Center, making the latest forms of treatment available to the patient population, and conducting clinical trials of innovative forms of therapy for MS patients in all stages of the illness.
- The UVM MS Center serves approximately 1,500 MS patients in Vermont, New Hampshire and New York.
- The UVM MS Center is affiliated with the National MS Society and the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers.
- Clinical services are provided by a team of neurologists, clinical nurses, and clinical trial coordinators working within the University of Vermont Department of Neurological Sciences and the Neurology Service of UVM Medical Center.

- Diagnostic consultation
- Second opinions
- Long-term follow-up management
- Education programs
- Training in administration of disease-modifying drugs
- A spasticity clinic for patients receiving intrathecal therapy
- Other forms of symptomatic therapy
- An IV infusion program
The UVM MS Center works closely with neuroradiology, neurosurgery, neuro-ophthalmology, physical therapy, rehabilitation services, and home nursing agencies to provide a broad range of patient care.
An ongoing research program at the UVM MS Center includes many clinical trials of new MS therapies, as well as translational and basic research to better understand, diagnose and treat MS.
