Program Goals

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) and UVM Larner College of Medicine in Burlington offers an ACGME accredited one year fellowship in Hematopathology.  The goal of our fellowship is to produce well-rounded, confident fellows prepared for a successful career in Hematopathology, be it in private practice or within an academic setting.  In keeping with the institutional commitment to graduate medical education, the goal of the fellowship program in Hematopathology is to satisfy health manpower needs for highly skilled, well trained hematopathologists throughout the state, the region, and the nation. The objectives of the program are as follows:

  1. To provide advanced training in Hematopathology leading to subspecialty board certification through the study of diverse and plentiful hematopathologic specimens, benign and malignant, with supplemental didactics.
  2. To offer sufficient diversity in the program such that graduates are qualified to pursue career opportunities in the field of hematopathology.
  3. To provide a flexible program allowing fellows to individualize their training to meet their specific professional needs and objectives.
  4. To allow each fellow to participate in departmental teaching programs for residents, medical students, clinical house staff and attendings.
  5. To provide each fellow with investigational experience.
  6. To provide opportunities for clinical-pathologic correlation, emphasizing the role of pathologists as clinical consultants.
  7. To develop technical expertise in each fellow, emphasizing up-to-date, state-of-the-art technologies and its application to clinical problem solving.
  8. To provide exposure to the basic principles of laboratory management, to the practice of cost effective medicine, and to quality assurance and quality improvement projects and activities.
  9. To certify that fellows are competent to practice hematopathology.
