Curriculum

The Hematopathology fellowship is a one year post-residency training fellowship designed to offer broad exposure to all aspects of Hematopathology. It will begin with 2 months of evaluating bone marrow, other clinical hematology laboratory specimens, flow cytometry, and tissue specimens in turn with the resident(s) assigned to the service. A research month follows in which a project will be developed in consultation with the Hematopathology faculty and an abstract will be prepared for submission to a national meeting. The coagulation service rotation next occurs under the supervision of the director of the Special Coagulation laboratory. This is followed by rotation onto the Hematopathology service to the end of the fellowship. This time will include:

  1. the strengthening of morphologic assessment skills
  2. the development and refinement of skills involving the integration of flow cytometry, cytogenetic, FISH, and molecular genetic testing with morphologic evaluation of patient specimens
  3. the development of resident supervisory and service management skills in Hematopathology
  4. preparation of research work for publication

The entire length of the fellowship has weekly didactic and clinical conferences including a monthly Journal Club and a dedicated Fellows Conference twice a month in which thematic cases with didactics will be presented to the fellow. The fellow will also participate in management decisions concerning the Hematology Laboratory and attend the weekly Hematology Management meeting and monthly Hematology Technologist Staff Meeting.
