Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism

The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Larner College of Medicine at The University of Vermont trains endocrinology and diabetes fellows in the evaluation, diagnosis, and management of endocrine diseases, emphasizing clinical excellence, lifelong learning, and participation in scholarly activities. We aim to prepare our fellows for successful careers in clinical practice, research, and education, while ensuring their eligibility for board certification.

A Message from the Program Director

UVM Medical Center, the teaching hospital for the University of Vermont College of Medicine, offers a two-year fellowship training program in Diabetes and Endocrinology under the auspices of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism in the Department of Medicine.

The training program is accredited by the Residency Review Committee of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, and provides eligibility for certification in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism from the American Board of Internal Medicine following completion. It is designed for physicians who are interested in a career in academic endocrinology, and includes opportunities for advanced study in nutrition, human metabolism research techniques, and basic sciences. Usually, one fellow is taken into the program each year.

The Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism outpatient program covers the full spectrum of endocrine services. It is based at 62 Tilley Drive in South Burlington and operates from 8:00AM to 5:00PM Monday through Friday, seeing approximately 14,000 outpatients per year.

The Endocrinology and Diabetes clinic provides comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services for pituitary, adrenal, parathyroid, and thyroid diseases, including fine needle thyroid aspiration and thyroid ultrasound.

There is a close working relationship with Pathology, Nuclear Medicine, and specialty surgical services, which makes for a smooth flow between preoperative testing and operative/postoperative management in persons with thyroid cancer and endocrine tumors.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes at the Larner College of Medicine at The University of Vermont is to provide comprehensive training in the pathophysiology, evaluation, diagnosis, and management of the broad spectrum of endocrine diseases, including diabetes. This program will fulfill the needs of trainees who anticipate careers in clinical practice, those who expect to function as clinician-educators, and those who intend to pursue a career in clinical and/or basic research. Fellows will possess and demonstrate habits of life-long learning to build upon their knowledge, skills, and professionalism. Through innovative teaching methods, unique clinical experiences, and faculty scholarly activities, fellows will acquire a comprehensive understanding of endocrine diseases, with emphasis on providing excellence in diagnosis and clinical management. Fellows will also further their knowledge through participation in scholarly activities, including literature reviews, research endeavors, attendance of conferences, publication of manuscripts, and local/national presentations. The fellowship program will educate fellows toward board certification through excellence in educational instruction and achievement of required procedural skills.

I enjoyed the Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism program at The University of Vermont Medical Center because it is a small program with a lot of close support from the faculty, but still within a University tertiary care center where I would be able to still see and learn from a large variety of patients. Outside of the program I enjoy the easy access to beautiful scenery and outdoor activities year long such as skiing, hiking, swimming and biking.

The UVMMC Endocrine Program felt more like a family than just a training program. I was fascinated by the diversification of patient population and disease pathophysiology seen through the large catchment are covered by UVM. Our mentors were the best – from highly experienced attending’s to newly graduated attending’s, variable levels of mentorship was available and I appreciate the open door policy with every single mentor I had. Outside of the program I enjoyed living in Vermont with easy access to hiking, coding breweries and the simple culture Vermont had to offer.
