Program Goals

The Dermatopathology Fellowship at University of Vermont Health is a one-year program designed to provide comprehensive training in dermatopathology to graduates from either general pathology or dermatology residencies.

The major objective of the fellowship program is to provide the fellow with the training necessary to become a competent dermatopathologist that is prepared for a career in either academic or community practice. The training is achieved through daily sign-out, with an attending dermatopathologist, of a high volume of clinical specimens representing a broad spectrum of neoplastic, inflammatory, infectious, and developmental processes.

The program is a collaborative effort between the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Department of Dermatology and, as such, there is a strong emphasis on clinicopathologic correlation and understanding the implications of diagnosis on the treatment and prognosis of dermatologic diseases. The fellow is expected to be a liaison between the laboratory and clinicians and is trained to have strong communication skills and professional demeanor.

The faculty is actively engaged in providing a wide-ranging and inclusive curriculum with formal didactic and slide review sessions designed to prepare the fellow for board certification. The fellow is also involved in teaching of dermatology and pathology residents as well as medical students.

There are a wide range of research opportunities available including clinicopathologic studies, immunohistochemical analyses, and molecular biologic investigations. Upon completion of the year, the fellow has the necessary skills to be a well-rounded physician and highly competent dermatopathologist.
