Clinical Rotations

PGY-1

A year of Internal Medicine is required prior to commencing neurologic training. This year should encompass a broad experience in general internal medicine and comply with ACGME requirements. We offer five categorical positions, with the preliminary year being completed at the UVM Medical Center's Department of Internal Medicine. A separate applicaton is not required.

PGY-2

(First Year of Neurology Training)

  • 10-11 weeks are spent on the Inpatient General Neurology Service
  • 6-7 weeks of Night Float in 1-2 week blocks
  • Additional 4-6 weeks of inpatient consultation and/or swing service
  • One month of Pediatric Neurology
  • One month of Psychiatry
  • Four weeks of Neuro-Radiology
  • Remaining time (approximately 4 months) in outpatient electives in specialty clinics, including introduction to Clinical Neurophysiology for all residents

PGY-3

(Second Year of Neurology Training)

  • 10-11 weeks are spent on the Inpatient Acute Neurology and Stroke Service
  • 4-5 weeks of Night Float in 1-2 week blocks
  • Additional 8 weeks of inpatient consults and/or swing service
  • One month of Pediatric Neurology
  • Remainder of the year is spent in outpatient neurology specialty clinics and electives

PGY-4

(Third Year of Neurology Training)

  • 10-11 weeks are spent as the Inpatient Neurology Chief Resident
  • 6-8 weeks on inpatient consult service
  • One month of Pediatric Neurology
  • Remainder of the year is spent on outpatient neurology specialty clinics and electives

Throughout the residency, residents are required to attend a weekly continuity clinic.  We offer outpatient clinic experiences in Clinical Neurophysiology, Epilepsy, Neuromuscular, Movement, Multiple Sclerosis and Neuro-Immunology, Neuropathology, Memory, Headache, Neuro-Oncology, Sleep, and Neuro-ophthalmology.  We ensure that all our residents have exposure to each of the outpatient specialty clinics, and we sequence these experiences in accordance with the individual interest of each resident.  We emphasize early exposure to the multiple subspecialties of neurology. 

Night float runs from 7PM-7AM Sunday thru Friday. Weekends are covered in 12 hour blocks. PGY-2's & PGY-3's share this responsibility.
