Clinical Rotations

First Year

The first year Fellow will start on the clinical ward service rotation beginning in July of their first year for 6 months (July - December). They will be paired with the third year Fellow during this month, so as to provide guidance and additional supervision as they become acclimated to the institution and the Fellowship. At the completion of the 6 months, they will enter into a research rotation for the remaining 6 months of the year (January - June), while the second year Fellow assumes responsibility of the clinical ward service.

The first year Fellow will be assigned a continuity clinic with one of the full-time faculty, as well as a designated endoscopy day, as most elective procedures will be generated from this clinic. This clinic and endoscopy day will remain throughout the length of the training.

The second year Fellow will begin their year of training continuing on the research rotation for the first 6 months (July - December), allowing them 12 months of continued and relatively protected research time. For the following 6 months of the year (January - June), they will assume responsibilities for the clinical ward service as before.

The second year Fellow will continue to attend their ambulatory continuity clinic, and designated endoscopy for the year. They will attend the 1/2 day Hepatology Clinic as well, while on the research rotation.

Third Year

The third year is designed to fine tune, and enhance endoscopic and clinical skills, as well as to allow additional research time.

The third year Fellow will be responsible for performing, and being trained, in all advanced endoscopic procedures including therapeutic ERCP, YAG laser, and photodynamic therapy. They will continue with their continuity clinics and designated endoscopy day as in the first two years. Furthermore, they will continue to attend the Hepatology Clinic 1/2 day a week for at least six months of the year.

The clinical ward service month will usually be completed in the initial month(s) of the academic year, and they will be paired with the new first year Fellow, so as to provide guidance and leadership, and function as a mentor for the more junior Fellows. Most importantly, they will be required to continue their research endeavors throughout the year, providing them with up to 18 months of research time. We put a heavy emphasis on this and require they submit their research for either publication in peer-reviewed journals or presentation at the national/international GI/Liver meetings.

The third year Fellow will also have the option of participating in various monthly elective rotations including Pediatric Gastroenterology, GI Radiology, Surgical Pathology and Motility. Such rotations should be arranged prior to the start of the third year, and do not preclude the Fellow from their continued responsibility to clinics, endoscopy and any ongoing research projects.

As stated above, the third year Fellow will provide guidance and leadership to the junior Fellows during their last year of tenure. To this goal, they will be responsible for organizing the call schedule amongst the Fellows, and Surgical Residents rotating on the GI service, if applicable. They will also be responsible for organizing the noon conference lecture series for that academic year.

The curriculum of topics and speakers will be formulated prior to the beginning of the academic year, with the assistance of the Program Director. Possible speakers will include the Fellows, Attendings within the division, faculty outside of the division, and Residents or students rotating on the service.
