University of Vermont Medical Center Board of Trustees Welcomes\New Members

Scott Boardman and Don Mathews, MD, bring diverse backgrounds and proven leadership to the volunteer board

Burlington, VT – University of Vermont Medical Center recently appointed two new members to its Board of Trustees, adding retired insurance executive Scott Boardman and veteran clinical leader and educator Donald Mathews, MD, to its 20-member volunteer board.

As the board welcomes Boardman and Dr. Mathews, Jesse Bridges, MPA, will continue to serve as board chair, with Alyson Richards continuing as vice chair and Meg H. O’Donnell, Esq. as secretary. Board member Tom Little retired from the board at the conclusion of the 2024 calendar year, after serving two, four-year terms.

“Our Board of Trustees plays an integral role in supporting the exceptional work of staff and leaders across UVM Medical Center,” said Bridges. “The skills and proven leadership of Scott Boardman and Dr. Mathews make them excellent additions to our group of committed and diverse professionals. Scott Boardman

A native Vermonter, Scott Boardman worked for the Hickok and Boardman Insurance Group for 40 years after earning a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Holy Cross College in Worcester, Massachusetts. He served as president and as an insurance broker, retiring in February 2023. Boardman currently serves on the PC Construction, Norfolk & Dedham/Union Mutual Insurance Company and AN Deringer Inc. boards. Boardman is also a past Mercy Connections board member. He was honored by Mercy Connections with the Catherine MacAuley Award in 2023.

Donald Mathews, MD

Dr. Mathews joined UVM Medical Center in 2010 as director of the Anesthesiology Residency Program and led the planning process that incorporated primary care internal medicine into the academic Department of Medicine. He was appointed chair of anesthesiology at University of Vermont’s Robert Larner, MD College of Medicine in 2017 and stepped down as chair on August 31, 2020. He also served as a special advisor to the president and chief executive officer of University of Vermont Health Network Medical Group.

An undergraduate alumnus of Harvard College in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dr. Mathews earned his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed a residency in anesthesiology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City, followed by a critical care and surgical metabolism research fellowship. Immediately prior to joining UVM Medical Center, he served as vice chair and residency program director for the Department of Anesthesiology at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City.
