Safe and Peaceful Communities

Don't Hate - Appreciate

A community-based cultural awareness and acceptance project, was started in the Winooski schools in 2005. The project is now a model for other schools and communities with mixed ethnic populations.

The Summer Enrichment Program

A program for children ages 1 - 18, incorporates nutrition, health, education, mentoring, job skills training, and other activities for youth over a 9-week period each summer. The program is free to children and local high-school students can earn wages by participating as junior counselors and staff.

Environmental Health

Winooski is reducing its carbon footprint in proactive and sustainable ways by reducing waste, conserving energy, and maintaining a healthy environment.

Peace Gardens Take Root

Gardens are located behind the the O'Brien Community Center and Landry Park allowing community members to produce vegetables native to their cultures and share their ethnic flavors with neighbors!

The O'Brien Community Center

The O'Brien Community Center located at 32 Malletts Bay Avenue, houses many organizations under one roof thus providing valuable opportunities for the diverse population of Winooski. The UVM Medical Center has a therapy pool within the center that is used for outpatient rehabilitation purposes.

Other organizations with space in the center include:

  • Winooski Family Center
  • Greater Burlington YMCA
  • Boys & Girls Club of Burlington
  • Winooski Department of Recreation and Community Wellness
  • Underground Teen Center
  • Vermont Dental
  • Winooski Health Center
  • Euro Food Mart
  • Association of Africans Living in Vermont
  • Vermont Refugee Resettlement Office

Community members can use the spacious community room for meetings and classes; utilize the community kitchen; and participate in activities and services offered by the above organizations.
