Biographical Information
Dr. Jennifer Gage, MD, is an anesthesiologist at The University of Vermont Medical Center and assistant professor at the Larner College of Medicine at UVM. She specializes in obstetrics, optimizing patient safety, the use of simulation for optimizing crisis management in the operating room and labor and delivery suite, early recovery after surgery, perioperative pain management, minimizing opioid use and postoperative delirium, advancing the use of ultrasound for patient safety, and minimizing perioperative blood loss in postpartum hemorrhage.
Dr. Gage considers it an honor to care for people in their most vulnerable times. Before medical school, she was a registered nurse in coronary care. In medical school, she became particularly interested in anesthesia and the critical care thinking skills required to safely care for patients in surgery. During her anesthesia residency at Wake Forest University, she developed a strong interest in obstetrics as well. She spent an additional 2 1/2 years in subspecialty training in obstetric anesthesia and performed laboratory research on spinal mechanisms of pain management. She has performed more than 20,000 epidurals for women in labor and anesthesia for more than 8,000 women having cesarean sections for delivery. She loves teaching procedures and critical thinking skills to healthcare providers. She is committed to patient safety and comfort, and to always getting better as an anesthesiologist and as a person.
Her care philosophy is to provide the safest and most comfortable care to every patient every time. She believes this is accomplished through open, caring communication with patients, families, and the healthcare team, individualized, thoughtful patient care plans, and a commitment to ongoing re-evaluation and optimization of treatment as the patient’s condition and level of comfort changes.
