Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) interconnects the methods of experiential learning, the learner's experience and spirituality creating an environment of learning that invites and encourages diversity, advocacy and community. The CPE educational process promotes self-insight, deepening of spiritual practice and effective compassionate pastoral care-giving. CPE graduates are able to address the diverse spiritual needs of others with greater sensitivity and professionalism.

Chaplain Certification

Certification as a Chaplain requires 4 units of CPE, a Masters Degree Theological Studies or in some cases an M.Div. and meeting with one of the National Committees:

Program Requirements

  • Learning contract negotiated with supervisor
  • At least 400 hours of combined ministry and participation in supervised group process
  • Recording and evaluation of ministry
  • Reflection on ministry with peers and supervisor
  • Individual supervisory conferences
  • Final written self-evaluation
  • Final written evaluation by supervisor
  • Attendance at Graduation

Learning Units

A "unit" of CPE consists of a total of 400 hours under the direction of an ACPE certified supervisor in an ACPE-accredited center.

Two units are offered throughout the year:

  • Summer: End of May - Beginning of August
  • Extended: October - April

Tuition and Benefits

The full tuition is $900 for either the summer or extended unit.

  • There is a $200 non-refundable deposit that is due at the time of acceptance. The deposit is applied toward the full tuition. The balance ($700) is due at the beginning of the unit on the first day.
  • There is no tuition refund after the program begins. The CPE Financial Policy is sent with the letter of acceptance and explains this practice.
  • There is free parking and shuttle bus transportation to the campus.
  • Students receive a meal card and are allowed a maximum of $5 per meal during the days of class as well as times of on-call.
  • There is a locked and safe sleep room for the overnight on-call.

Clinical Pastoral Education Program Calendar

Individual Units/Level I and Level II

Summer CPE - For persons needing an intensive full-time program that falls outside the typical academic calendar - from the end of May until early August. Although this program usually has mainly seminarians, other interested persons are strongly encouraged to apply. Beside regular daily meetings ( Monday through Thursday - 8:30am to 4:00pm), individual supervision and clinical time with patients, there is an on-call requirement of two nights and one weekend each month, all included in the required hours for the program. Send all inquiries to the Director of CPE at UVM Medical Center Hospital.

Extended CPE - For persons able to make a part-time commitment. The extended CPE unit begins in mid-October and ends in early April. The CPE program meets one day a week in group and runs for about 26 weeks. They require an average of 16 hours a week between group time, individual supervision, and clinical work with patients. Beside regular group meeting, individual supervision and clinical time with patients, there is an on-call requirement of two overnights and one weekend per month, all included in the required hours for the program. The 2020 and 2021 CPE Schedule is as follows:

  • Summer Unit: May 26, 2020 - August 5, 2020
  • Extended Unit: October 15, 2020 - March 25, 2021
  • Summer Unit: May 17, 2021 - August 4, 2021
  • Extended Unit: October 21, 2021 - April 7, 2022

CPE Accreditation

The UVM Medical Center Clinical Pastoral Education Program is accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education Inc., (ACPE).

ACPE is an interfaith association that was founded in 1967. ACPE provides Standards and Objectives for developing CPE programs. The association certifies CPE supervisors who have fulfilled requirements for certification. ACPE also accredits centers to offer programs in CPE.
