If you smoke or use any form of tobacco products, The University of Vermont Medical Center encourages you to quit tobacco use for your health. Our Quit In-Person group programs are committed to helping you be free of tobacco use.

Local resources are available through The UVM Medical Center In-Person Group program to help you and your family members lead a tobacco-free lifestyle. Quitting tobacco use requires multiple attempts. Quitting smoking or other forms of tobacco is one of the best things you can do to improve your overall health. The positive effects on your health and well-being are immediate.

Using a group for counseling and support combined with nicotine replacement can be the fastest and most effective way to stop any form of nicotine addiction.

"It's great to have a place to go where everyone shares a common goal. It might be the most important hour I spend all week for my long-term health."

Tobacco Cessation In-Person Group Classes

Group cessation classes are based on the American Cancer Society's freshstart program which runs for 4 consecutive weeks and is facilitated by a Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS). The overall goal of the program is to help individuals overcome their addiction and enjoy the health benefits of a tobacco free lifestyle.

The program is free and confidential. Delivered in a small group community or workplace setting, participants receive personal attention and the support of their peers. The program is evidence-based and proven effective. Groups are tailored to meet the needs of different learning styles and each session combines group discussion, education, skills practice in a fun and relaxed atmosphere.

During the In-Person Group participants are introduced to the following key stages:

  • Preparation phase: tailoring your plan and laying the foundation for your success
  • Quit day: planning and affirming the decision to quit
  • Maintenance plan: providing skills, resources and support to remain tobacco free
  • Nicotine Replacement: your TTS will help you choose the right nicotine replacement plan. An 8-week supply of free patches, gum or lozenges are available to group participants (while supply is available)
