The elbow is a combined hinge and ball-and-socket joint, held together by ligaments that connect the upper arm bone and the forearm bones. Muscles and tendons around the elbow provide force to bend and straighten it like a hinge, and allow rotation of the forearm.

When the elbow joint is injured or becomes inflamed or damaged due to arthritis or other conditions, pain and stiffness may make movement difficult or impossible.

Elbow Problems: What You Need to Know

Teamwork

Our diagnostic team includes radiologists who are specially trained in bone imaging. These specialists have access to the latest technology for imaging and diagnosing elbow problems. Depending on your condition, diagnosis may involve x-rays, MRI scans, laboratory tests, nerve studies or other procedures.

Personalized Care

At the University of Vermont Medical Center, we offer a full array of surgical and non-surgical treatments for conditions of the elbow, from hand therapy to injections to surgical elbow reconstruction (including elbow replacement). When possible, conditions are managed with appropriate non-operative treatments, including elbow therapy. When surgery is required to promote healing or relieve pain, our clinical staff offers state-of-the-art care.
