University of Vermont Medical Center’s Code Team Earns Top Quality Award From American Heart Association

The University of Vermont Medical Center has received the “Get With The Guidelines Resuscitation Gold Award.”

(BURLINGTON, VT)  The University of Vermont Medical Center has received the “Get With The Guidelines Resuscitation Gold Award” for sustained use of quality improvement measures in the treatment of in-hospital cardiac arrests, which occurs in the U.S. 200,000 times per year.

The American Heart Association and American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines-Resuscitation program is designed to save lives by providing hospitals with current research-based protocols for treatment, and by tracking their use. To earn the Gold Award, the Code Team at The University of Vermont Medical Center had to achieve a high level of compliance with the guidelines for two consecutive years.

“This award reflects the great teamwork we’ve developed with contributions from respiratory, cardiology, pharmacy, nursing, anesthesiology and other departments which are all dedicated to providing the best possible patient care,” says Dr. Joseph Winget, cardiologist at the UVM Medical Center and associate professor at the UVM College of Medicine. “The tools the Guidelines program provides have really helped us with measurement so we can continuously improve.”

“We’re proud of meeting the Gold standard for two consecutive years - something which most hospitals have not been able to achieve,” said Dr. Amy Teleron, hospitalist and assistant professor at the UVM College of Medicine and Faculty Director of Code Blue Team Leadership Training. "It's an indication that our multidisciplinary team has been working effectively, and every member shares in this great accomplishment. We hope that our weekly team leader simulation training program will continue to help everyone perform their best for every single patient."
