BURLINGTON, VT – Fletcher Allen’s commitment to become one of the greenest health care organizations in the country has been recognized again with an award from the nation's leading association devoted to environmentally responsible health care.

For the 5th year in a row, Fletcher Allen was selected to be in the “Environmental Leadership Circle” by Practice Greenhealth - its highest award. The Leadership Circle designation is given to institutions that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to reducing the environmental footprint of their operations.

Fletcher Allen participates in dozens of environmentally responsible initiatives, including seeking out “green” products for use in maintaining and cleaning its facilities, and operating extensive recycling and composting programs. For example, between 2007 and 2012, Fletcher Allen increased its annual recycling by more than 60 percent to 1,132 tons.

In addition, all exterior lighting at the main campus was recently converted to LED technology and together with other projects, a reduction in electrical consumption of more than 2 million kilowatt hours has been achieved in recent years.  The hospital is also a recognized leader of a movement in healthcare to use locally-sourced, sustainably produced food.

“We’re incredibly proud of the many green initiatives at Fletcher Allen, and are committed to continuing our efforts to further reduce our environmental impact,” said Sandra Felis, RN, MS, senior vice president of patient care services and chief operating officer at Fletcher Allen Health Care. “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of many employees who have helped make our organization an environmental role model and a leader in green health care.”

“This Award demonstrates Fletcher Allen’s commitment to their community to protect public health and preserve the environment,” said Laura Wenger, RN, Executive Director of Practice Greenhealth. “Fletcher Allen is truly demonstrating leadership for the future of health care.”
