Job Description

Porter Medical Center seeks a strategic leader and operational teambuilder with the experience to lead the financial, IT and supply chain functions for the medical center within the University of Vermont Health Network.  Our ideal candidate will have healthcare financial executive experience and a proven record of leading teams with accountability and transparency.  Our next CFO will be a facilitator, teacher and collaborator with demonstrated experience working within a matrixed organization.

Job Description

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior level executive position at Porter Medical Center and fulfills the role of finance executive for the organization. This individual collaborates with senior dyad leaders to ensure effective application of appropriate professional standards, policies and procedures, and staffing across finance and business support functions and, if applicable, any other assigned functions.


The CFO is responsible for optimizing evidence-based practice and reliable operational processes and policies across finance and business support functions in support of the mission and vision of PMC and UVMHN. This role’s work is focused on ensuring compliant, evidence-based and customer-focused patient and organizational financial and business systems and processes. Work toward this end is accomplished through collaborative relationships with senior leaders and an oversight relationship with the Porter COO / CMO and UVMHN Executive Vice President for Finance. The CFO is a member of the PMC Senior Leadership Team and works closely with its members, management, and Medical Staff in meeting the strategic, clinical, operational and financial priorities within areas of responsibility.


Strategic goals for this role include developing an aspirational vision for finance and business support services grounded in a business partner mindset; ensuring appropriate finance and business support functions, systems, and processes; supporting leader access and application of finance and business support tools; and strengthening decision support capacity.

Job Qualifications
Education

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline. A Master’s Degree in Business or Health Care Administration is preferred. Further credentialing (CPA, CMA, CFA, or HFMA) is a plus.

Experience

  • Requires 7 – 10 years of progressive health care finance and staff supervisory experience, including leading a matrixed health system environment. The ideal candidate will have a background in Critical Access Hospital finance and working understanding of financial operations in acute care, ambulatory care, and long-term care.

  • Experience in hiring, developing, and coaching staff; a clear track record of building a high performing team through talent management.

Knowledge/Special Skills

  • Position requires excellent analytic and communication skills and demonstrated aptitude at coaching others in financial management and analyses. Must be familiar with all aspects of healthcare finance including, but not limited to, general ledger, revenue cycle, managed care contracting, reimbursement, and operational finance, cost accounting, treasury functions, and strategic financial planning.

  • Must have working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles, advanced computer, database, and spreadsheet skills, and extensive experience at interpreting analytical results for management and providing recommendations on business problems.
