At The University of Vermont Medical Center Inpatient Rehabilitation, our rehabilitation services help you regain function and independence — so you can get back to doing the things you like to do.

Inpatient Rehabilitation: What You Need To Know

As part of a university medical center, Inpatient Rehabilitation offers the latest technologies and research-backed treatments for a wide range of medical conditions – ensuring that every patient's care is based on the most recent scientific knowledge. The conditions we treat include:

  • Stroke
  • Brain injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Amputation (pre- and post-prosthesis)
  • Neurological disorders such as Parkinson's Disease, Guillian-Barre Syndrome, Multiple Sclerosis and Post-Acute Critical Neuropathy
  • Multiple Trauma with multiple fractures or Multi-system Trauma
  • Burns
  • Orthopedic conditions such as Hip Fracture, Bilateral Hip Replacement, and Bilateral Knee Replacement
  • A range of other medical conditions – contact our Admissions Office if you have questions about the conditions we treat

Our rehabilitation facility offers a comfortable 34-bed facility with private rooms. The program is individualized to the needs of the patient, and the focus is on helping people to achieve a level of independence to safely leave our acute care setting and continue his/her recovery at home or in some instances, at a subacute pace.

Our rehabilitation program is appropriate for people who require 24-hour physician availability, 24-hour nursing care, and the skill of at least two different therapies, and can tolerate at least three hours of therapy for five days a week.

Teamwork

Each patient at The UVM Medical Center Inpatient Rehabilitation is cared for by a team of rehabilitation experts, led by board certified physiatrists, physical medicine and rehabilitation doctors, and include rehabilitation nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech and language pathologists, psychologists/neuropsychologists, recreational therapists, case managers, social workers, nutritionists/dietician and other specialists as needed.

The team understands the complexity of rehabilitation and coordinates all aspects of each patient's stay according to his/her specific needs and goals through daily discussions and weekly team meetings.

Patient-Centered, Family-Friendly Care

Most of our patients return home with family, caregivers or loved ones. We understand this will be an adjustment for everyone involved. We encourage and support training throughout all phases of the patient's stay. We provide in depth education and training for family and care givers so the patient is well prepared to return home. Preparation for discharge is coordinated through case management and includes patient and caregiver training, ongoing education on their current conditions, opportunities to practice skills in the community and assessment of equipment needs for the home.

Committed to Getting Patients Back to Their Lives

At The UVM Medical Center, we are committed to helping our patients regain independence with self-care and functional mobility, improve communication skill and social interaction, enhance adaptation to injury or illness through education and training, assist with transition to home or alternative level of care and begin the process to return to productive roles at home as well as in the workplace, school and community.
