A substance use disorder (SUD)—also called drug or alcohol addiction—is a condition that affects a person’s brain, behavior and thinking. People with SUDs become unable to control their use of substances, such as alcohol, tobacco, legal or illegal drugs, or medications. Their intense focus on certain substances reaches a point where it interferes with their ability to function in day-to-day life, and they continue to use substances even when they cause harm to one’s health, relationships or job.

The Addiction Treatment Center (ATC) at The University of Vermont Medical Center provides a range of outpatient services for people with SUDs and co-occurring mental health conditions. Starting with a comprehensive assessment, we work with you to determine the right level of care and provide individualized treatment planning to help you achieve and maintain your recovery goals. Our team of licensed professionals understands that what works for one person may not work for another and provides evidence-based services, including individual counseling, intensive group-based therapy, psychiatric assessment and medication management.
