Drug addiction, otherwise known as substance use disorder, is a disease where a person has an intense craving for alcohol, and/or drug (which can also include prescription medication). This disease is hard to control even when it harms your health, relationships or job. Fortunately, researchers have found treatments that can assist people recovering from substance use disorder.

Addiction Treatment at DayOne

The DayOne Program at The University of Vermont Medical Center is an outpatient treatment program for substance use disorders. We provide comprehensive treatments ranging from office-based evaluation and counseling to intensive outpatient services. The DayOne Program treats adults, age 18+, and ensures access to care, activities and programs for persons living with disabilities and/or limited English proficiency.

The DayOne Program offers group therapy using the following techniques:

  • Emotion Regulation - the ability to take charge of your emotions and respond to emotional situations.
  • Mindfulness - Focusing on awareness of the present moment.
  • Group Psychotherapy - A small group that meets under the guidance of a trained therapist.
  • Motivational Enhancement - A technique designed to improve a person's motivation to change their behavior.
  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy - An evidence-based treatment to address thoughts, emotions and behaviors.
  • Relapse Prevention
  • Coping & life skills training
  • Other evidence-based solution-focused techniques

Each group meets for an average of 12 sessions.

Conditions We Treat

The DayOne Program treats adults who are experiencing symptoms related to addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders, as well as the following:

  • Alcohol Dependency
  • Cocaine Dependency
  • Benzodiazepine Dependency
  • Opiate Dependency

As part of DayOne’s commitment to the community, special priority is given to pregnant individuals, individuals who inject substances and those who are nursing.

Substance Abuse and Co-Occuring Treatments

What works for one person may not work for another. We offer individualized treatment to get you on the road to recovery and assist in keeping you there. We perform a comprehensive assessment to determine the appropriate level of care needed and then provide information

Our range of outpatient treatment services include:

  • Level III – Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) meets three times a week for three-hour sessions, for an approximately 12 sessions. We offer a morning and an afternoon IOP, which both address co-occuring mental health disorders.
    • The morning IOP meets Monday/Wednesday/Friday from 8:30 – 11:30am.
    • The afternoon IOP meets Tuesday/Thursday/Friday from 12:00 – 3:00pm.
  • Level II – This group meets twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 – 11:15am for approximately 12 sessions.
  • Level I – This level of service might include group or individual counseling. The Level I groups meet once a week for ninety minutes. The Level I focus groups includes: Women's Recovery Group, Cognitive Behavior Therapy Skills Group, Relapse Prevention, etc. We encourage clients to participate in self-help groups such as 12-Step, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), Gamblers Anonymous (GA), Celebrate Recovery (CR), Cocaine Anonymous (CA), etc.

We offer a team approach to treating drug addiction with over 125 years of combined clinical experience in the treatment of substance use disorders. Confidentiality and professionalism are highly valued and carefully monitored. We are committed to providing you the best evidence-based clinical care possible.

Payment Information

DayOne accepts most health insurance. Clients are encouraged to call their insurance provider for benefits and authorization requirements.

DayOne is a designated preferred provider for the State of Vermont Alcohol and Drug Abuse Programs. Grant funds may be available to offset treatment costs for income eligible clients.

The University of Vermont Medical Center will not deny services due to inability to pay.

  • Random urine screens and breath alcohol testing to verify self-report.
  • Consultation for integrating mental health services.
  • Assessment for detoxification services.
  • Referral services to residential services as needed.
  • Collaboration with the Addiction Treatment  Program at the UVM Medical Center
  • Collaboration with Seneca Center and/or Mood and Anxiety Disorders Clinic at the UVM Medical Center.
  • Educational services and assistance to other UVM Medical Center departments or agencies.
