What is Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)?

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensory disorder causing an almost irresistible urge to move the legs. The urge to move the legs is usually due to uncomfortable, tingly or creeping sensations that occur when at rest. Movement eases the feelings, but only for a while.

RLS is not necessarily confined to your sleep time, though:

  • Symptoms most often occur when you are relaxed or lying down.
  • You may also notice small, jerky movements of the toes, feet, and legs as you are trying to fall asleep.

What is Periodic Limb Disorder (PLMD)?

Periodic Limb Movement Disorder (PLMD) is a related condition involving involuntary, rhythmic limb movements, either while asleep or when awake. While most people who have Restless Legs Syndrome also have PLMD, only some people with PLMD also have RLS.

Diagnosing Restless Leg Syndrome at UVM Medical Center

The best way for a doctor to diagnose RLS and PLMD is to review your symptoms and medical history.

Your doctor may also order blood tests or nerve studies to rule out other causes. In some cases, you may be referred to our Sleep Center. Tests performed there may include:

  • Consultation - During a 40-60 minute consultation, we will discuss your sleep problem, your medical history and perform a thorough physical examination.
  • Sleep Study - While there is no specific test to diagnose RLS and PLMD, your doctor may use lab tests to identify other disorders or a sleep study to identify other sleep disruptions that may impact the management of RLS and PLMD.
