The UVM Medical Center Community Health Needs Assessments

The University of Vermont Medical Center routinely conducts community health needs assessments (CHNA) to understand current health trends, needs, and assets. Federal legislation requires hospitals to conduct community health assessments every three years. Community assessments help us to identify areas of focus and are an integral resource for our community benefits plan.

The UVM Medical Center's 2019 Community Health Needs Assessment covers the health service area of Chittenden and Grand Isle counties. The assessment includes information from community leader interviews and survey, secondary data, a community survey and table discussions at a community breakfast. The following topic areas were identified as the top six needs in the community.

  1. Mental Health
  2. Substance Use Disorder
  3. Affordable Housing
  4. Childhood and Family Health
  5. Disease Prevention
  6. Cancer

The 2019 CHNA covers a large range of topics but is not a complete analysis of any one issue. Rather, these data help to identify priorities which lead to productive community discussion and the creation of goals. We invite the reader to investigate and use the information in this report to move toward solutions for healthier communities.
