The UVM Medical Center Hospital Governance
The UVM Medical Center Board of Trustees has 18 members. Fifteen trustees are elected by The University of Vermont Health Network, UVM Medical Center’s parent corporation, and must be “broadly representative of the community interest.” The Chief Executive Officer of UVM Medical Center, the Dean of the Larner College of Medicine at UVM and the Dean of the UVM College of Nursing and Health Sciences serve ex officio. In addition, the president of the Medical Staff is invited to attend all board meetings and participate in discussions as a non-voting member of the board. The board’s Nominating and Governance Committee coordinates the nominating process.
UVM Medical Center's Board of Trustees is committed to ensuring that UVM Medical Center conducts business in an open, transparent and inclusive manner. The board holds full board meetings that include a public session in which the public is given an opportunity to comment on matters relating to UVM Medical Center’s operations. All business that involves neither confidential nor proprietary information is conducted in the public sessions of these meetings.

The University of Vermont Health Network
The University of Vermont Health Network, the parent organization of UVM Medical Center, Central Vermont Medical Center, Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital Elizabethtown Community Hospital, Porter Medical Center, and Home Health and Hospice was established under an affiliation agreement dated October 1, 2011, and amended January 1, 2013, with the goal of developing a coordinated, regional health system in Vermont and northern New York that will improve health care quality and lower health care costs.
The affiliation agreement closely aligns our organizations with state and federal health care reform agendas that promote enhanced integration. UVM Health Network has approval rights over significant actions for each member organization, including budgets, strategic plans, major financial decisions, election of trustees and the appointment of CEOs.
UVM Health Network has a 27-member Board of Trustees drawn from the boards of member organizations. Thirteen board members are appointed by UVM Medical Center, five by UVM Health Network – Central Vermont Medical Center, and six by UVM Health Network – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, and the Presidents of the Medical Staffs of UVM Medical Center, UVM Health Network – Central Vermont Medical Center and UVM Health Network – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital serve ex officio. UVM Medical Center’s CEO Dr. John Brumsted, serves as the President of the UVM Health Network; UVM Health Network – Central Vermont Medical Center President Judy Tarr Tartaglia and UVM Health Network – Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital President Stephens Mundy serve as Senior Vice Presidents.
