The Mother-Baby Unit at the UVM Medical Center

For years, The University of Vermont Medical Center has provided warm, personal care to expectant mothers in a modern birthing facility. To ensure that the place mothers stay after a child is born is just as extraordinary we have renovated the Mother-Baby Unit.

The new Mother-Baby Unit at the UVM Medical Center is a comfortable place to welcome your newborn. The space enables you to be cared for by our expert physicians and staff while resting and preparing for your journey home.

Conveniently located on the same floor as the Birthing Center and NICU, the Mother-Baby Unit offers a comfortable place for mothers and families to welcome a newborn.

The Mother-Baby Unit features the following:

  • Private bathrooms in most rooms.
  • A comfortable sleeping space in most rooms for supporting family members.
  • A comfortable waiting area for families and visitors.
  • Extra rooms to be used in times of unexpected high census to ensure all mother-baby patients are able to stay in the Mother-Baby Unit with expert nursing care and attention provided by experienced staff.
  • A room on the unit that can accommodate bariatric patients safely and comfortably.

Take a virtual tour of the new Mother-Baby Unit and learn more about the birthing experience at the UVM Medical Center.

Mother-Baby Unit Welcome Policy

Our standard visiting policy has needed to adapt during the COVID-19 pandemic. Please download the Visiting Policy document for more information. Please know that we adapt these on a continuous basis and changes can happen quickly. Once you arrive to the Birthing Center, your health care team will update you on the most current policies that are in place for all three units including the Mother/Baby Unit and NICU.

Breastfeeding Support/Lactation Services

All Mother-Baby staff are experienced in supporting you and your newborn in those important first few days of breastfeeding. If you require more intensive support with breastfeeding, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is available most days. Home lactation services are also available in the community. Please check with your insurance company before your delivery to arrange for lactation support after discharge. Arrangement ahead of time ensures breastfeeding support right when you get home.

Going Home with Your Baby

It is strongly recommended that you have your car seat fitted to your car before delivery. There are many places near you that can provide this car seat fitting service, including many fire stations and police stations. Find a place for you. You can make an appointment at the hospital to have your car seat fitted by calling 802-847-1215 (appointment needed). Bring your newborn's car seat to the unit before discharge. Your baby will be discharged in the seat after the straps have been checked by your nurse.
