Obstetrics and Midwifery at the University of Vermont Medical Center offers you the option of seeing one of our certified nurse-midwives or obstetricians - providing care that offers you a comprehensive, seamless experience tailored to your individual needs during pregnancy, birth and after you have had your baby.

Here at Obstetrics and Midwifery, we understand you want the best medical care and that you want your birthing experience to be private and personal, with individual attention for you and your family. We offer you the excellent care, nurturing and support of our nurse-midwives, and the high-risk specialty expertise of our board-certified physicians.

What if I am pregnant or breastfeeding: Is it still safe to get the vaccine?

Pregnant patients are more likely to have serious illness from COVID-19 and are at risk of developing pregnancy complications as a result. The vaccine is very effective in reducing the risk of infection.

On September 30, 2021, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an urgent health advisory to increase COVID-19 vaccination among people who are pregnant, recently pregnant (including those who are lactating), who are trying to become pregnant now, or who might become pregnant in the future to prevent serious illness, deaths, and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

The CDC health advisory strongly recommends COVID-19 vaccination either before or during pregnancy because the benefits of vaccination for both pregnant persons and their fetus or infant outweigh known or potential risks. Additionally, the advisory calls on health departments and clinicians to educate pregnant people on the benefits of vaccination and the safety of recommended vaccines.

Additionally, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding be offered the vaccine to prevent serious illness.

As Heard On Facebook

"Just came home with our daughter after having a long labor. Words cannot express the amount of gratitude for the team at the UVM Medical Center. Painted on the walls, I read "One Team, One Purpose, One Patient." Well, we can tell you from experience, they get it done at this hospital. There were so many incredible people involved, and I wish I could name some of them here, but I eventually came to the realization that these people don't do it for the recognition. Even getting off the elevators, employees with no connection to us whatsoever were there with a smile and an open heart to make you feel welcome and comfortable. Vermont is really a special place, and the UVM Medical Center is a really special hospital. Thank you."
