Nephrology Services

The University of Vermont Medical Center is the primary provider of care for most patients with kidney, or renal, diseases in Vermont and for many patients in northern New York.

Our Nephrology service provides renal replacement therapies for patients with end-stage renal disease including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapies in the intensive care unit. Here, we have an experienced staff committed to training patients for a variety of home dialysis therapies. In conjunction with the Department of Surgery, the Nephrology service provides support for kidney transplantation and for kidney/pancreas transplantation.

In addition to patients with primary renal diseases, The UVM Medical Center serves patients with complicated hypertension. Faculty provide both inpatient and outpatient consultation.

The service is nationally recognized for its expertise in:

  • Management of acid-base and electrolyte disorders
  • Diabetic nephropathy
  • Hypertension
  • Acute renal failure

Regional Dialysis Services

The UVM Medical Center has an extensive outreach program with dialysis units in Barre, Rutland, St. Albans, South Burlington, and Newport. We visit these units regularly and are available for both on-site inpatient and outpatient consultation in Barre, Rutland, St. Albans, and Newport.<

Our UVM Medical Group doctors offer specialty expertise for numerous kidney disease problems, including:

We also provide specialty care in acute and chronic hemodialysis on-site and a number of home options, including peritoneal dialysis, home hemodialysis including the NxStage System. Our hemodialysis clinics are located in multiple locations across the state.

Hypertension

The Nephrology Clinic provides a program for the comprehensive diagnosis and management services for all forms of difficult to manage hypertension in conjunction with Surgery and Radiology at The UVM Medical Center.

The Burlington clinic also provides plasmapheresis services for patients with systemic diseases involving the kidney and provides support services for kidney and kidney/pancreas transplantation in conjunction with our surgeons.

Home Dialysis Training and Support

Our home dialysis training site supports Peritoneal Dialysis and Home Hemodialysis (NxStage) modalities.

The home program staff provides dialysis training and can discuss dialysis options, schedule consults, and answer questions concerning home dialysis treatment or supplies.
