Interventional Radiology at the UVM Medical Center

A rapidly growing field, interventional radiology (IR) offers patients leading-edge minimally invasive procedures to diagnose and treat a wide range of vascular conditions. Interventional radiologists perform treatments using small incisions, which result in less pain and a shorter recovery time than traditional surgical methods.

The University of Vermont Medical team of nationally and internationally recognized interventional radiologists has extensive experience performing advanced treatments and will create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your specific diagnosis.

We offer:

  • Specialized expertise: Our IR team is made up of physicians with board certification in vascular interventional radiology. These specialists are leaders in their field, with deep expertise using the latest interventional radiology procedures to treat common diseases and disorders found in nearly every organ system.
  • Advanced treatment options: Our high-volume interventional radiology (IR) program offers you the full spectrum of IR procedures for conditions ranging from pulmonary embolisms and uterine fibroids to liver cancer, including minimally invasive treatments not found in many medical centers. We also offer leading-edge treatments like interventions for complex venous disease and complex lymphatic anomalies.

Comprehensive care management: From private office consultations to follow-up after your procedure, our interventional radiologists directly oversee your care and collaborate with other specialists, such as cardiologists or oncologists, to develop your personalized treatment plan. Specially trained IR nurses and skilled IR technologists are also part of your expert and compassionate care team and work closely with your provider to ensure you receive the best treatment possible.

Conditions We Treat with IR Procedures

Interventional radiology procedures are among the least invasive surgical methods available. At the UVM Medical Center, we feature interventionalists trained to treat either vascular or neurovascular conditions — but never both. You can be sure you’re receiving care from a physician with deep expertise and experience treating your specific condition.

We offer interventional radiology services for a variety of conditions, including:

  • Peripheral artery disease
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Cancer
  • Gall stones

At the frontier of cancer care, our interventional radiologists excel at delivering the latest minimally invasive cancer therapies. Our physicians have extensive experience providing internal radiation embolization (Yttrium-90) treatment and thermal ablation therapies to effectively treat cancers of the liver, kidney and lung.

What to Expect from an IR Procedure

Sophisticated image guidance and the use of special instruments allow our interventional radiologists to provide minimally invasive surgical solutions that quickly get you back to your normal activities.

Many procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and use moderate sedation for faster recovery than general anesthesia. For additional monitoring and pain management, some interventions may require you to spend a night or two in the hospital – far less time than most conventional surgeries.

Depending on your condition, your interventional radiologist may only need to make one very small incision to insert needles, wires, catheters and other thin instruments into your body. These special tools make it possible for your physician to perform a variety of surgical treatments to remove diseased tissue, stop blood flow, or freeze or burn tumors.

Your interventional radiology team will advise you on how to best prepare for your specific procedure.

Awards and Certifications

American Board of Medical Specialties

All UVM Medical Center interventional radiologists have earned board certification from the American Board of Medical Specialties. This recognition ensures that your interventional radiology procedure is performed by a physician who meets the rigorous standards set by the IR specialty and their peers in the field.

American Board of Radiology

Specializing in the use of X-ray, CT scans and other precision image-guiding technologies for interventional procedures, our IR physicians are also certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR). Many of our interventionalists have earned the ABR’s subspecialty certification in vascular and interventional radiology, which recognizes the additional training these individuals have received to provide you with the highest quality care.
